You are not your past, You are not your future.
We live in a world obsessed with defining us. Our cars, homes, clothes, careers, relationships, even our beliefs – they all get wrapped up in how we see ourselves and present ourselves to others.
Your thoughts and beliefs are based on these systems. Don’t be afraid to challenge them, thoughts are like suggestions, take what you want and let go of the rest. They are responses to our perceptions and experiences but do not constitute our core self. By acknowledging your thoughts/feelings without allowing them to control you, you can achieve a more grounded and balanced perspective on life. #Self-awareness #Selfdiscovery #personalgrowth #limitingbeliefs #emotionalawareness
“You cannot transform yourself, If you do not know yourself”
Who AM I?
You are not your thoughts.
You are not your feelings.
You are not your past.
You are not your future.
You are not what you do.
You are not the car you drive.
You are not the house you live in.
You are not what you wear.
You are not your family.
You are not your government.
You are not your religion.
So, if you're none of those things… who ARE you?
Questioning Your Limited Beliefs
We're all products of our upbringing. From day one, we're subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) taught what to think, how to feel, and what makes us "good" or "bad" people. Some of this guidance is helpful, but much of it creates limiting beliefs that hold us back from our true potential.
That's why it's so important to ask yourself:
Why do I believe/react/feel this way?
Was I taught to see the world in this way, or did I arrive at this conclusion independently?
Is this belief serving me, or is it holding me back?
You Don't Have to Think The Way You Do
You don't have to think the way you think! Thoughts are not reality, they are not truth, they are stories we tell ourselves – some are helpful, some are hurtful. We have a choice as to what to pay attention to, what to absorb and what to let go of.
The same goes for feelings. When we have a feeling it’s usually the result of a thought, If we had a bad thought about ourselves or a situation then we will have a feeling that corresponds to it. So If thoughts are stories we are telling ourselves, we can influence our emotion by changing our thoughts and agreeing with the ones that benefit us. Similarly, emotions can trigger us to search for an underlying story, potentially creating a self-perpetuating cycle. When emotions arise first, it’s more effective to simply observe them without attaching any thoughts to avoid fueling this cycle and increasing our suffering. Typically, these emotions will dissipate on their own if not fueled by thoughts.
Choosing Something Different
Becoming aware of your thoughts and reactions is the first step to change. When you see the patterns in how you engage with the world, you have the choice to do things differently.
Notice: When a thought pops up, instead of immediately identifying with it ("I'm so stupid"), simply observe it ("I'm having the thought that I'm stupid").
Reframe: Replace that negative thought with something more positive and constructive.
Acceptance: Allow yourself to believe the thought, do not give in to the old way of thinking, be persistent with the new mindset that creates the you, you want to become.
The Essence of You
When you strip away the thoughts, feelings, and external labels, what remains? It's a tough question! But here's a hint: The true essence of you is likely tied to things like kindness, curiosity, creativity. Those traits aren't taught as much as they're felt.
This journey of self-discovery is a profound and ongoing one. It takes courage, but knowing you are more than your labels, thoughts, and feelings is an incredible key to personal growth and peace.
